    Sleep can wait

Most mornings when I have to get up at zero dark thirty (5:00 AM) to drive Frankie to work I’m tempted to just leave my morning bucket of coffee alone and drag my tired old butt back to bed after dropping her off….especially when I’ve been up playing with my laptop until I can no longer see the keyboard to type. That’s what I did this morning and didn’t manage to get my head down until a little after 2:00. And then there are mornings like this.

    ink

My Dell V305 all in one is thirsty. This thing isn’t too bad on black cartridges but it sucks down color ink like nobody’s business! When I first got this thing for Christmas last year it was a big surprise. My old HP Deskjet was on it’s last legs and I had been shopping around for a new printer. My Lexmark All in One was also gasping for breath; print heads shot but the scanner still worked so I was making do, scanning with the Lexmark and printing with the HP.

The girls got a deal on the Dell at Wal-Mart and I even found a set of replacement ink cartridges, also on sale at Wally World so I figured we were in good shape. I printed a couple of photos from one of the photo CDs we had (this was when I was still shooting snapshots with a 35MM SLR) and the prints were pretty nice. I was happy!

Then I discovered how fast this monster drained color cartridges. The set that came with the machine were used up quickly as I printed copies of holiday photos to send to my mom. The spare set didn’t last long either. Soon  I was in Wally World picking up a pair of black and a pair of color cartridges.

I was not real happy as I swiped a credit card at the checkout and headed for the exit with my MasterCard account $140 heavier. Gotta pay that sucker off the first of the month! At least, I told myself, I’m not paying shipping and handling charges ordering these things online from Dell.

After setting all the printer preferences to “penny pinching miser”, printing all documents in black and white draft quality and only printing high quality photos when it was absolutely necessary I managed to make those 2 color cartridges last almost as long as 1 black cartridge. This is when I discovered Wal-Mart no longer carried Dell printers or replacement cartridges……..now they’re only available from Dell……damn it! Time to do some shopping.

This month the 3rd (when my check arrives) is on Saturday so Uncle Sugar coughed up my disability check today instead. This means it’s officially Mother’s Day at Rocket’s house (time to pay this mother****er and that mother****er and, hopefully, when I’m finished I won't be a broke mother****er).

Frankie’s payday just happened to hit today as well and she had a little overtime this payday so the direct deposits made the checking account fatter than usual. To make matters even better my prescriptions through the Veteran’s Affairs clinic are now 90 day supplies (I pay $40) instead of the 30 day refills I was getting through Frankie’s insurance for nearly $200 in co-pays so we have a few extra bucks this month. WOO-HOO!

    Canon printer

I happened to be browsing through the Wal-Mart sale flyer that fell out of our twice weekly “newspaper” the other day and look what I found:

A Canon inkjet printer for $30!!!!

Let’s see; pay $50 for 2 cartridges from Dell or $30 for a printer with cartridges.

Hmmmmm, what to do, what to do?

Guess where I went this morning after dropping THE BOSS off at work!

My first printer, 15+ years ago, was a Canon inkjet and I loved it! The only reason I replaced it was after 5 years of faithful service I couldn’t find cartridges for it anymore. My 35MM SLR and my DSLR are both Canon’s and I love them. There is now a Canon PIXMA iP2600 sharing table space with my Dell V305 which is now a scanner and document printer. The Canon is now my photo printer.

Another nice thing about wandering around at daybreak, naturally with my camera in my lap as I drive,  is this:

    and this

and right around the corner from home (please note they did use the deer crossing)

    Okay, that’s enough for now.

Sam says we need a nap and I always listen to him.

    Sleeping beauty

    He’s smarter than I am.

But he doesn’t know spit about ‘lectricity so don’t let him tell you how to rewire a porch light.

He thinks watching my hair stand on end is funny.

    Good night!

Printer cartridges...hmmm.....I need 2 new ones according to my printer...it says they're empty...funny how they're still printing perfectly well no problem...at £25 each I am in no rush...they're not refillable and there's no altern's to the manufacturers ones avail. anymore. Be much cheaper to buy a new printer with cartridges included! Great pic of Sam....he is an excellent lesson in the art of relaxation!!

I move that the printer industry be required by law to put the Bic logo on all their equipment. When it's empty just throw it away and buy another! My first printer was a Canon and worked beautifully. I finally had to replace it after 5 years of flawless operation because the ink cartridges were no longer in production. I printed an 8X10 for my mom this morning using the new one and it's absolutely gorgeous!

Printers, like taking out the garbage, and fixing the plumbing under the sink, are under the heading "Boys' Club'...it's not something a woman should be messing with...at least, not THIS woman...I had so many problems with my HP in went into the storage cupboard after two months...now, sensibly(?), I go to the library, for while they have sh*t programs and iffy computers, they have three Canon 'everything's', as we call them here...do it all, black and white, ten cents, colour, twenty five cents....last time I talked to God about my NEXT husband, I put in a request for one who knows his way around printers and other kinds of software, cuz I'm really tired of doing it myself....as far as Canon goes, both my brothers ( the Squirrel and the Oranguatan) are amateur photographers and swear by Canon as the best there is for the money, not to mention the punishement the equipment can take and still give the best...beautiful pics, BTW, Chip...something I really needed to see today...thankyou. love, Katie.

We should think of printers as ink dispensing machines, it's not the set up cost but the running cost that's the bug bear. Nice pictures too. Hard to drag yourself out of bed some mornings but it does have its rewards!

Oh yeah; strap that paper to a turtle and point him this way. I'm down to about 3 dozen sheets and Mom still has wall space in the den. I wonder if she's getting a discount on frames.

Well eat something besides Cocoa Puff sammiches for a change!

The closest Office Max is in Christiansburg, only 50 miles each way, so I'll just get the Nu-Kote cartridges from our Super Dooper Wally World. They carry them here but were out. Radio Shack has an add saying they'll beat anyone's price and so does Wally World. Since there both in the same shopping center I may be running up and down the sidewalk in one of those electric shopping buggies.......if I can manage to knock one of the lazy fakers out of one with a charge left on the battery. My cane may be aluminum but fill it up with bird shot and it'll really leave a mark!

Hey Bro! I have had the Pixma 2600 for quite some time....I just had to buy ink cartidges again....$40 for the set at Office Max. Reason we went there is Jeremiah needed ink for his all in one HP...$38 for the set....but he also wanted to get his favorite ink pens and they are the only one that sells them.... I also checked out the blue tooth adapter, chill pad and mouse for my mini....(some things you just need a mouse for!!) So Far, I love the mini....By the way...I still have photo paper to send to you, when I'm rich again....I keep running out of money before I run out of things to pay for....This month I have already bought 6 loves of bread and 6 boxes of cereal....and it's only the 2nd!!..

I be shocked that Sam is sleeping with fresh meat standing outside his window....LOL... maybe he didn't feel like chasing them. And I know you was a winged warrior of the sky; but even a jar head knows the black means ground and red means hot. Just a little reminder don't sticking your finger into light sockets until you turn off the switch.
    Be well my brother

Your photos are just stunning. I know your problems with printing photos. It costs way to much. When I got a my laptop 2 year ago I got a cannon M160 all in one free with the laptopn. I love it and it does print beautifull . But the cost of ink. I think it is probably more economical to take a Cd in and have it printed somewhere else. I just picked a color ink cartridge for 28.00 I have been without one most the summer. I will just now use to to print special cards for people or photo for my own wall. Also you have to remember most photo printed on printers will fade over time. Mine have done pretty good but unless they are printed at a print job they can fade. Last year when I 1st got internet I was getting only 3 or 4 hours sleep for almost 2 months I swore I wouldn't let myself stay up past 12 but last night here I was till 2am. Anywho do love the photos here. Hugs

Thanks everyone. Even with what felt like ground glass in my eyes at that early hour I was astonished by the sunrise and hoped I could do it justice. Sam managed to get more of a nap than I did because he kept stealing the blanket........and the pillows.......and he snores. Other than that he's been a good boy so we took him through the drive-thru at McDonald's after I picked Frankie up. He absolutely LOVES cheeseburgers and fries! You should have seen him "sitting pretty" and grinning! I didn't get a shot because, while i will shoot through the windshield from time to time, rearview mirror shots are tricky.

I just found something else I like about this new printer. Nu-Kote sells remanufactured cartridges for it; $12 for black and $17 for color, both are the high yield sizes. I did some research before I went to Wal-Mart and plunked down the plastic. One comment most everyone who wrote a critique makes is they can't believe how long the ink lasts. I still have 3 black cartridges left for the Dell but the last color one is just about dry. Once it's gone the Dell will be strictly B&W and when those black ones run out it will be nothing but a glorified flatbed scanner.

Beautiful photos. I'm very biased towards Canon for things now. I dropped my little digital in my sister in laws stream and it still took great photos afterwards with the water adding to the affect. I've never had any problem with Canon.
Poor Sam looks tuckered out after all that getting up early. Have a great weekend. xx

I had to settle for a lesser printer than I would have liked because the cost of the ink was too high for it so chose a model with reasonably priced ink refills.
Love the photos. I am very dissappointed with the ones I got from my week away. I am back there next week so will make sure I get some better ones.

Chip, Glad the deer used the crossing. Road kill is so messy and does not make a good meal. Very good sunrise photos. Still use my Cannon T50 for film and the Cannon SD800 IS for digital. Get some rest, have a great weekend and
    as ever be well
